FGCU Clinches ASUN Tournament Berth with Convincing
Victory over UNF
February 28, 2024
Jacksonville, FL - The University of North Florida Men's basketball team lost to Florida Gulf Coast University, as FGCU secured their ticket to the ASUN Conference Championship with a dominant 79-60 victory on February 28th, 2024. The win not only propelled them into the playoffs but also served as sweet revenge for a previous loss to UNF this season.

The Eagles (13-17, 7-8 ASUN) soared out of the gate, establishing an early lead thanks to the sharpshooting of Isaiah Thompson. He knocked down a career-high eight three-pointers, finishing with a game-high 26 points. FGCU's defense also clamped down on UNF, limiting the Ospreys to just 31 points in the first half.
UNF was led by the scoring efforts of Chaz Lanier and Jah Nze, who each chipped in 14 points. But the Eagle's offense was too much for the Ospreys, with FGCU shooting a sizzling 51.7% from beyond the arc. For its part, UNF could manage only 36.4% from the field and a paltry 28.6% from three-point land.

Unlike the first game between the two teams this year that saw UNF (15-15, 8-7 ASUN) lead for almost the duration, the Eagles never trailed Wednesday night as FGCU started on a 9-2 run and never looked back. The Eagles connected on nine 3-pointers as a team in the first half en route to a 39-31 lead at halftime.

For FGCU, this win was a culmination of a season characterized by resilience and determination. Coach Pat Chambers celebrated his team's achievement, stating, "We did a great job getting stops. We got good opportunities in transition."

For UNF, Lanier continued his streak of scoring in double figures in every ASUN game this season, while Nze has reached double figures in three of his last four games since taking over a key role in the rotation. Despite their efforts, the Ospreys have lost their last three home games and need to turn things around quickly as the ASUN Conference tournament is fast approaching.
North Florida will finish up the regular season hosting senior night against Stetson this Friday, March 1, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. at UNF Arena.

The first singles match to finish saw Elon's Mariana Reding get the win at 6-3, 6-4 in No. 5 singles against Sofia Snitko. Mariana's sister, Lizette Reding, then put Elon ahead 2-1 with a straight sets win against UNF's Long on the No. 2 court.
UNF then got on the board in No. 1 singles with a win by Amy Kaplan over Elon's Sibel Tanik, 6-4, 6-4. With the match then tied at 2-2, Helen Sarikulaya prevailed in an up and down three-set victory against UNF's Lyshko (6-0, 1-6, 6-3) to put Elon back in front, 3-2.

Makela earned a point for UNF with a win over Elon's Ella Suk, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, playing in the No. 6 position, leaving one match - the No. 3 spot - yet to finish and the score tied 3-3. That match saw Elon's Miray Konar come from a set down to win the second set against Nash, taking the match to a decisive third set.

North Florida Men Defeat Queens University with an Impressive Offensive Display
January 20, 2024
Jacksonville, FL - UNF Arena became a nest of jubilant fans, as the University of North Florida Ospreys (11-9, 4-1) came away with a decisive 91-75 victory over the visiting Queens University Royals (7-13, 1-4). From the opening tip-off, UNF exhibited an unrelenting offensive, leaving the Royals trailing the entire game.

Chaz Lanier once again led the Ospreys with his inside and outside scoring, dropping a game-high 20 points. His smooth three-pointers and acrobatic layups kept the crowd entertained. Nate Lliteras and Dorian James contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Ospreys didn't just bring their A game on offense; their defense was solid as well. Lliteras anchored the paint with eight rebounds, while James pulled down six. The team's relentless hustle disrupted passing lanes and forced 13 turnovers. This stifling defense kept the Royals from finding their rhythm, holding them to under 50% field goal percentage.

UNF's dominance went beyond individual stats. Their teamwork was a showcase of precise passes, synchronized cuts and finding the open man. The team's offensive display showcased the chemistry forged through Coach Matt Driscoll's disciplined coaching.

The victory wasn't just another notch on the win column. With this win, head coach Matthew Driscoll and his coaching staff are now the winningest coaching staff in ASUN history, with 228 wins.
The Ospreys remain tied for the second spot in the conference with Kennesaw State. Their relentless offense, suffocating defense, and determination to keep improving paint a picture of a team hungry for bigger successes. Queens, despite fighting valiantly, couldn't keep pace with the Osprey onslaught, and the deficit in skill and experience was evident.

For UNF, the win keeps the momentum going as they move into the heart of the ASUN season. With a well-oiled offense, a stingy defense and a team brimming with confidence, the Ospreys seem poised to continue their run. At this point in the season it appears a safe bet they'll go deep into the post-season ASUN tournament and potentially beyond.

Dolphins Come Up Short In Nail Biter against Kennesaw State
January 21, 2024
Jacksonville, FL - Swisher Gymnasium in Jacksonville was awash in anticipation for yesterday's matchup between the Jacksonville University Dolphins (10-9,1-4) and the Kennesaw State Owls (13-6,4-1). Both teams, hungry for victories in a very competitive ASUN conference, promised a battle of grit and determination. And they delivered, as the Owls escaped with a win on the road, 83-79, that wasn't decided until the last few seconds of the game.

While the result stung, there were silver linings for the Dolphins. Powell's career-high scoring performance and McCray consistent offensive presence are promising signs. The team's defensive tenacity throughout the game kept the game close until the final seconds.

While falling the 1 and 4 in the conference, the Dolphins' nonetheless showed their ability to compete with the best in the ASUN conference, holding their own against the first-place Owls (tied with the University of North Florida at 4-1). The Dolphins possess a potent offense, hitting over 50 percent from behind the arc yesterday, and a gritty defense, ingredients necessary for success in this competitive conference. Kaila Rougler, UNF Ospreys

FGCU dominated from the outset, establishing a double-digit lead early in the first quarter and never relinquishing it. The Eagles' relentless pressure on defense forced turnovers and disrupted UNF's offensive rhythm, making it difficult for the Ospreys to find their flow.

Lyric Swann, UNF's leading scorer with 11 points, tried to keep the Ospreys afloat with her trademark drives and mid-range jumpers. However, the Eagles' balanced attack, with twelve different players putting up points, proved too much to handle. Uju Ezeudu led the way for the Eagles with 9 points and 6 rebounds.

While the contest was one-sided throughout, it provides valuable lessons for the Ospreys as they look to turn things around in a very competitive ASUN conference. Improving ball security against an aggressive defense and finding more offensive consistency will be key for UNF in their upcoming matchups.

Key Takeaways:
FGCU defeated UNF 70-38 in a dominant performance.
Lyric Swann was UNF's top scorer with 11 points.

January 4, 2024
Jacksonville, FL - The Stetson University Hatters kicked off their Atlantic Sun Conference play with a heart-stopping 61-57 road victory over the University of North Florida Ospreys on Thursday, January 4th at UNF Arena. In a battle of in-state rivals, the Ospreys displayed resilience and grit, coming back and closing a double-digit deficit midway through the third quarter, but ultimately fell short.

The Ospreys jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game, before the Hatters scored 6 straight of their own. Stetson then maintained their lead throughout the first half, going into the locker room with a 28-16 lead.

Helena Rafnsdottir, UNF Ospreys

The second half saw the Ospreys whittle down the lead utilizing a full court press and briefly switching to a zone defense. The teams exchanged leads down the stretch with the outcome hanging in the balance. With under a minute to play, UNF took a one point lead. However, inconsistency from the free throw line hurt the Ospreys. The Hatters, with their own free throw woes, nonetheless were able to secure their first conference win as the Ospreys were unable to secure the missed free throws during the final seconds of the game.

This victory marks a significant win for the Hatters, starting their conference campaign on a positive note. Coach Lynn Bria praised her team's tenacity, "Our kids played really hard, I thought our defense in the first half was the best that we have played all year."

The Stetson win sends a message to the rest of the ASUN Conference. With a team filled with talent and determination, they are poised to make a serious run for the conference title. The UNF Ospreys, while disappointed by the close loss, can take solace in their overall performance, displaying poise and determination after falling behind early, and look forward to rebounding in their next game.
